If a plane leaves New York heading for London and is just 1% off course from the start, where do you think it ends up?

It sounds minor, doesn’t it? A single degree or two in the wrong direction. But over the 3,500 miles between JFK and Heathrow, that tiny misalignment would cause the plane to miss its target by over 280 miles — landing somewhere towards the South of France, or even Northern Scotland, depending on which way it drifted.

A small error at the start, compounded over distance and time, becomes a major deviation from the intended destination.

Now, swap out “plane” for “organisation” and “destination” for “strategic vision,” and you’ve got a pretty accurate picture of what happens in transformation programmes every single day.

The Subtle Danger of Misalignment

When I walk into a transformation review, I often ask each member of the leadership team to describe the organisation’s vision for the future. Nine times out of ten, I get a series of different answers.

Not wildly different. They usually share the same themes and intentions but different enough that, when translated into strategy, operating models, and day-to-day priorities, the result is drift.

And drift, in transformation, is dangerous.

When teams interpret strategy differently, effort becomes diluted.
When functions optimise for their own version of success, friction builds.
And when leaders don’t model a unified message, belief and confidence across the workforce start to fracture.

That’s how organisations end up “busy transforming” without actually moving closer to their destination.

The 1% Rule of Transformation Alignment

Think of alignment as your navigation system.

At the start of any transformation, everyone’s excited. New direction, bold ambitions, fresh language. But alignment isn’t a one-off event; it’s a constant calibration.

  • Every new decision
  • Every change in leadership
  • Every emerging external pressure

…is an opportunity for drift to creep in.

The most successful transformation leaders I’ve worked with define direction, absolutely, but they also routinely check alignment across the team, especially when under pressure. They encourage challenge, surface assumptions, and use structured frameworks (like those in the Transformation Leaders Body of Knowledge – TLBoK) to ensure that the “why,” “what,” and “how” remain synchronised across every level of the organisation.

Lessons from the Transformation Leaders Body of Knowledge (TLBoK)

In the TLBoK, we explore alignment across three critical lenses:

  1. Visionary Roadmap – How clear and consistent is the articulation of your future state? Are all leaders telling the same story in their own words?
  2. Operating Model – Are structures, systems, and processes designed to reinforce the same outcomes? Or are there competing priorities built into the design?
  3. Culture & Communications – Is your internal narrative aligned with your external ambition? Transformation lives and dies by what people believe and repeat.

Together, these lenses provide a practical way to detect drift early and correct course before misalignment turns into fragmentation.

The Role of the Transformation Leader

True transformation leadership isn’t about constant motion; it’s about constant alignment.

It’s your role to ensure every team member, from the Board to the frontline, understands not just what is changing, but why, how, and in what direction.

When alignment is achieved:

  • Strategy translates cleanly into execution
  • Teams make autonomous decisions confidently
  • Communication feels natural and consistent
  • Culture becomes the accelerant, not the anchor

When it’s not, transformation becomes just another journey without a destination.

Course Correction Starts Now

If you suspect your organisation might be a few degrees off course, don’t panic.
It’s rarely too late to correct direction, but it does require conscious leadership, courageous conversation, and a clear framework for recalibration.

Start by running an alignment review using the TLBoK Transformation Canvas. It’s a simple but powerful tool to help you visualise where each part of your organisation stands today, how well it connects to the vision, and where inconsistencies may be forming.

Because in transformation — just like in flight — it’s not the speed that matters most, it’s the direction.
