    Forum Description

    I remember as a child sitting in the back seat of my dad's car when were going on a long journey looking over the biggest book that I'd seen in my life....

    The AA Road Atlas 1975 edition!!

    Pouring over all these colourful lines on page after page, trying to work out how one related to another and what route we were taking.

    Today, with virtually everyone either having a car with a Sat Nav built in or having a 'Maps' app on their phone, people just don't know how lucky they are!!!

    However, irrespective of whether you are going old school or a dab hand with new technology, neither is effective unless you are clear about your destination.

    You have to know where you are going and this is as important in life generally as it is in past/ future car journeys.

    The ability to create clarity in life, in your career especially, is an essential skill to develop and there have been many books written on the subject.

    Equally important is to have a mechanism on which to track your progress, and keep you focused on the destination.

    Think about it, your sat nav in the car does this, doesn't it?

    Once you set the destination and agree a route, it goes 'mad' if you deviate off route. In many cases, literally shouting at you to turnaround and get back on the route we agreed!

    In recent years, I have adopted a really simple, yet highly effective approach to gaining the clarity that I need in life.

    Everything is broken down and presented over two sides of A4 paper, each page divided into a number of boxes;

    Page 1 boxes include;

    • My Core Focus - get absolutely clear about my career objectives and my 'offer' to future clients/ employers
    • My Longer Term Targets - usually where I want to be in 5 years (I know others look at a 10 year horizon) - this includes measurable objectives
    • My Strategy - this outlines the core elements of what I intend to do to achieve my objectives
    • My Medium Term 'Interim' Targets - measurable objectives at an agreed mid point - in my case 3 years. This is a great way to measure progress and adapt things as you proceed

    Page 2 boxes include;

    • My 1 Year Plan - again a list of measurable objectives that I will achieve in the next 12 months
    • Goals for the Year - a list of activities that I need to complete to ensure that I deliver my 1 Year Plan
    • My Rocks for the next 6 months - by focusing on the big stuff first (Rocks), I ensure that my time is allocated accordingly
    • Issues for the Quarter - getting clear about the risks and issues that you may face in the next quarter will help you establish appropriate mitigating activities
    • My Team - who do I need to help me overcome the issues identified and deliver the Rocks
    • My Resources - what books/ training programmes/ seminars/ networks do I need to get involved in to support the delivery of my objectives?

    Once completed, on two pages, I have an effective 5 year action plan, which I formally review on a quarterly basis, updating the 6 month Rocks and getting clear about any upcoming issues/ challenges.

    I'd strongly recommend that you build something out like this for yourself and share it with someone that can be your 'Sat Nav lady' - i.e. you Accountability Buddy - I always find that I'm more committed to doing something if I've committed to a third party!

    If you'd like to discuss this further or want a copy of the template that I use - let me know
