I remember as a child sitting in the back seat of my dad's car when were going on a long journey looking over the biggest book that I'd seen in my life....
The AA Road Atlas 1975 edition!!
Pouring over all these colourful lines on page after page, trying to work out how one related to another and what route we were taking.
Today, with virtually everyone either having a car with a Sat Nav built in or having a 'Maps' app on their phone, people just don't know how lucky they are!!!
However, irrespective of whether you are going old school or a dab hand with new technology, neither is effective unless you are clear about your destination.
You have to know where you are going and this is as important in life generally as it is in past/ future car journeys.
The ability to create clarity in life, in your career especially, is an essential skill to develop and there have been many books written on the subject.
Equally important is to have a mechanism on which to track your progress, and keep you focused on the destination.
Think about it, your sat nav in the car does this, doesn't it?
Once you set the destination and agree a route, it goes 'mad' if you deviate off route. In many cases, literally shouting at you to turnaround and get back on the route we agreed!
In recent years, I have adopted a really simple, yet highly effective approach to gaining the clarity that I need in life.
Everything is broken down and presented over two sides of A4 paper, each page divided into a number of boxes;
Page 1 boxes include;
Page 2 boxes include;
Once completed, on two pages, I have an effective 5 year action plan, which I formally review on a quarterly basis, updating the 6 month Rocks and getting clear about any upcoming issues/ challenges.
I'd strongly recommend that you build something out like this for yourself and share it with someone that can be your 'Sat Nav lady' - i.e. you Accountability Buddy - I always find that I'm more committed to doing something if I've committed to a third party!
If you'd like to discuss this further or want a copy of the template that I use - let me know
